The Gangster

A convenience store glowing under its lights at night

You work the night shift at the Nite Owl, studying between customers and drowning in rent. At three in the morning a big, quiet man with split knuckles comes in for a bottle of water, and you offer him a plaster and a free chocolate bar just past its best-before. He comes back the next night at 3:07, and the next, and the next. Soon your problems start to vanish – and so do the people who caused them. Brett is the boss’s enforcer, and he’s decided you’re his.

1. Past Its Best-Before

⚠️ Content warnings: blood and injured hands (implied violence); financial stress and debt; working alone on a night shift.

2. Female Preferred

Two weeks of 3:07 visits, and the water guy has started to talk – a little more every night. You’re wearing mascara for a man whose name you still don’t know, and the spare room is finally about to be filled. But he’s listening very closely to every word you say about it.
⚠️ Content warnings: unsolicited explicit photos (mentioned); a frightened young woman forced to back out; stalking; turning up uninvited at the protagonist’s home.

3. House Rules

The man from the 3:07 bottle of water is standing on your doormat, holding your ad and offering six months’ rent in cash. It’s the answer to every problem you have – so why won’t your heart slow down? If you let him in, you’ll need rules. The question is whether he’ll keep them.
⚠️ Content warnings: intimidation of third parties; drug dealing (mentioned); entering the protagonist’s room without permission (to fix a fire hazard); scars and prison tattoos; a terrified former flatmate repaying a debt.

4. Top Shelf

Rent paid, flat fixed, and your new flatmate is quiet. He keeps every rule you set – so far. But a tiny kitchen leaves very little room between you, and every few days there’s a fresh plaster on his knuckles that neither of you mentions. How long can you pretend you haven’t noticed?
⚠️ Content warnings: recurring hand injuries (implied violence); sexual tension; mention of a restraint incident involving a child at school.

5. Three Minutes Early

It’s 3:04 when the door chimes, and the hopeful smile is already on your face before you see who’s walked in. Three minutes is a long time on a night shift – long enough for everything to go wrong. And when Brett finally arrives, you’re about to see exactly what he is.
⚠️ Content warnings: an armed robbery; a knife held to the throat; a minor neck wound and blood; methamphetamine use; a brutal beating with a head injury; evidence tampering and lying to police; a first kiss.

6. One Brass Key

Kissing Brett is like being kissed by a drowning man, and the only key to your door is still yours to give. Tonight you could hand him everything. But a man like him doesn’t come without a past – are you ready to hear all of it?
⚠️ Content warnings: explicit sexual content; backstory of child abandonment, physical abuse by a parent, foster and group homes, juvenile detention and prison; crying; a threatening anonymous message with a covert photo.

7. Eat Your Prawns

Someone has a photo of you behind the Nite Owl counter, and the man who sent it wants you at Sunday lunch. Brett says it isn’t a request. So you put on your best dress and smile across the prawns – and try not to wonder how much the boss already knows about you.
⚠️ Content warnings: organised crime; veiled threats against the protagonist’s mother, cousin and school children; surveillance; a bent police officer; self-injury from rage (gripping a steering wheel until knuckles bleed).

8. Keep the Change

Six months after Sunday lunch on Pier Nine, Brett no longer needs plasters – other men do his hitting now. Your last night shift at the Nite Owl is coming, ready or not. Everything he’s building is meant to keep you safe. But not everyone in the boss’s family likes how high he’s climbing.
⚠️ Content warnings: implied disappearances and violence; an intimidation campaign; controlling behaviour; isolation; a protection dog; feeling caged; unwanted touching (brief).

9. Black Glass

Priya turns thirty and wants to go dancing, so you put on a short black dress and red lipstick and tell Brett where you’re going. He doesn’t even look up. But from the moment you walk into the Lantern, the whole club seems to know whose you are – and somewhere in the dark, someone is watching you dance.
⚠️ Content warnings: alcohol; unwanted groping on a dance floor; explicit sexual content; sex against a one-way window above a crowd (exhibitionism-adjacent; nobody can see); possessive behaviour.

10. Under the Jacaranda

Forty guests wait under the jacaranda in your back garden, Juno wears white flowers, and a caramel chocolate bar four days past its best-before has become a ring. Brett’s side of the aisle is full of men in good suits. Before the night is over, you’ll learn exactly what it means to be his.
⚠️ Content warnings: a wedding attended by criminals; transfer of a criminal empire; explicit sexual content (tender); references to past violence.
